Om Shanti
OM SHANTI. "OM“ is the mother of all mantras; “SHANTI” means peace, and is the mantra for peace.
This album has found it really, really hard to see the light of day. Most recordings were finished by 2007 in sessions that were sometimes very touching, intense and, of course, meditative. All that was left to do was mix the recordings. Then, on October 11, 2007, the Master Yogi who had composed most of the songs we played and who was our spiritual guide, entered eternal trance, or mahasamadhi. Following the shock of his departure, our activities came to a standstill for about six months. During this period, one of our gifted singers and guitarists, who also made his mark as a brilliant audio engineer on previous albums, left our ensemble. So we had no choice but to entrust the production to a much less experienced member of the group. Nonetheless, he was the only one with a formal training as a sound engineer. His first mastering turned out to be rather unsatisfactory, so all of the 2,000 CDs produced by then went into the garbage. The next batch of CDs drove the group to the brink of bankruptcy. This time, the sound did meet the standards of our group and our fans worldwide. However, an artifact lasting just for the fraction of a second spoiled another 2,000 CDs! While the third edition of “Om Shanti” was duplicated, most of us were probably praying for God’s blessings and protection – and our prayers were heard.
The songs on this album range from mantric and soulful Indian classics to modern renderings of spiritual songs that convey simple joy and a sense of lightness. Actually, the composer expressly demanded that his songs be either performed by men-only or women-only choirs (for solid inner reasons, to be sure). Our ensemble, however, was explicitly given special permission for using a mixed choir. This allowed for arrangements with charming effects, owing much to the voices that spread an inner fire. But, to get a first-hand impression, why not check out “Om Shanti” yourself? It’s available here.
