Nirvana
The album "Nirvana" (CD No. III) was born in the Lotus Seminarzentrum in fall 2003 on a very intense and soulful weekend of recording. During mixing, we decided to replace the Indian string instrument esraj with its little sister – the sarangi – which, according to Indian lore, is said to most resemble the sound of the human voice, and literally translates as “one hundred colors”. First we had to order a sarangi from India, and then we spent months modifying it. In fall 2004, we finally recorded the tracks of the sarangi, drums and some other instruments like the Jew’s harp, and added them to the album. For the sitar solo, Kanala’s sitar was used – after being overhauled and strongly improved in many weeks of hard work. Mixing was none the easier. True, unlike in the production process of “Prem Sagare”, we didn’t have to make a pilgrimage to Nuremberg for every mixing session, and we didn’t lose data in a hard disk crash as with "Cosmic Dream" (ever since we make three to four backups of each step). Still, this time around, our chief sound-mixing engineer Peter dropped out after the long hours of daily mixing left him with too much unfinished business at his job. So we needed to recall Christoph to Austria, who had meanwhile settled in California, and felt compelled to lock him into our studio for one month. Christoph was chosen as he is a graduate audio engineer and has, as an artist, remained aloof of many worldly responsibilities. In this way, “Nirvana” was finally attained in March 2005. This album, the third in the series, is the result of many years of meditation and couldn’t have been done without the previous albums. Its sound has been improved, and its “spirit” quickly got us friends and even true fans.
In our tour of the Balkans in June 2006, which led us through Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia, we performed under the name “Nirvana”. While on the road, we found the right ice cream to match our new band name.
